Project for Dairy Farming in

Introduction:

Agriculture still remains a gamble in monsoon for majority of our farmers. Our farmers come from ‘Rain shadow areas’ or ‘Return monsoon areas’. As a result there is no enough water supply for agriculture. However, these farmers have 10 to 12 cattle each.  On this scenario Dairy Farming can be an important source of subsidiary income to small/marginal farmers and agricultural labourers. Insufficient rains may not act as a deterrent factor for this source of income. The surplus fodder and agricultural by-products can be gainfully utilised for feeding the animals. The farmers can feed the animals on the fodder made from plants like bori & babhali or whatever they can produce in such circumstances where there is shortage of water. Besides the income from dairy farming there are other advantages involved. Agriculture is a seasonal activity. Therefore there is lack of employment in the off season. With dairy farming there is a possibility of finding employment throughout the year for many farmers who do not have any cattle.

Animal waste can be used as manure which provides a good source of organic matter for improving soil fertility. It also adds to the crop yields. The dung can also be used for developing gobar gas plants. Such plants can prove to be an economical source of fuel for domestic purpose. It can also be helpful for running engines for drawing water from wells. The main beneficiaries of dairy programs are small/marginal farmers and landless labourers.

Objectives of the project:

• To enhance the keeping quality of organic milk and also to avoid economic losses to farmers
• For manufacturing various milk products to make it available for the domestic market
• To provide continuous gainful employment to the small/marginal farmers and landless labourers

Scope for Dairy Farming and its National Importance:

• There is a wide scope for processing of milk and manufacture of milk products for domestic consumption as well as export
• The total milk production in the country for the year 2008-09 was estimated at 108.5 million metric tons and the demand is expected to be 180 million tons by 2020. To achieve this demand annual growth rate in milk production has to be increased from the present 2.5 % to 5%

Financial Assistance Available from Banks/NABARD for Dairy Farming:

• In order to consider for refinance support by National Bank, participating banks may consider technical feasibility, financial viability and bankability

Loan from banks with refinance facility from NABARD is available for starting dairy farming:

• To obtain bank loan, the farmers should apply to the nearest branch of a commercial bank, regional rural bank or co-operative bank in their area
• The prescribed application forms are available in the branches of financing banks

For dairy schemes with very large outlays, detailed project reports will have to be prepared:

• Purchase of milch animals
• Construction of sheds
• Purchase of equipments etc.
• The feeding cost during the initial period of one/two months is capitalised and given as term loan
• Cost towards land development, fencing, digging of well, commissioning of diesel engine/pump set, electricity connections, essential servants' quarters, godown, transport vehicle, milk processing facilities etc. can be considered for loan
• Cost of land is not considered for loan
